Easy T-shirt Gift for Father’s Day

What dad couldn’t use more t-shirts? My daughter and I teamed up together to make a quick and easy t-shirt gift for Father’s Day with my Cricut Maker!

The Hane’s Men’s Beefy T-Shirts are my go-to shirts to use as bases for craft projects, especially if I’m making an item that I know will get a lot of wearing. Yes, they are a bit more expensive than grabbing one at the craft store. But the 100% cotton is a wonderful heavy weight and so soft. They stand up beautifully to washing. And Hanes Beefy T’s are available in a really wide range of colors (several dozen) and sizes (from kid’s all the way up to men’s 5X, as well as tall sizes). I always keep a stack of these on hand in my craft stash for making t-shirts for all of us!

To start out, we had to pick a t-shirt design. Bridget gets easily overwhelmed and doesn’t have a lot of attention span for looking at a lot of design options. So when we do projects like this together, I will “pre-screen” designs. For this project, I added some possible designs to a Cricut Design Space project and saved it. Then, we viewed the project together in my project library. At the bottom of a project’s profile, it shows thumbnails of all the files used in the project. She browsed the thumbnails and told me which one she wanted. Then I took that information and set up the file!

Setting the file up to make this t-shirt is simple. Just click the supply list link to the file to load the design in your Cricut Design Space. This file is included in Cricut Access, so if you are an Access subscriber there is no charge for making this project.

Next, change the colors if you’d like. (This step is optional.)

The most important step is to resize the design for the size of t-shirt that you are putting it on. This particular design is very tall and skinny, so the vertical dimension is the one to really pay attention to how it lays out when deciding what size to make it.

Once you’ve cut out (don’t forget to mirror!) and weeded the design, ironing it on is easy with the Easy Press. My daughter assisted with part of the ironing on, and she loved being able to set the timer and temperature. (She took a break from helping to take the photo of me!)

It only took less than 5 minutes of work at the Easy Press station in my studio and the Best Dad Ever t-shirt was all ironed! ( Oops - I forgot to take my Easy Press Mat out from underneath the shirt before taking the picture! I love my mat and wouldn’t want to use my Easy Press without it.)

Bridget is thrilled with how her gift for Daddy turned out, and I’m sure it will be a much loved (and much worn) gift!
