I'm doing a lot of Project Life lately, and the Silhouette Portrait machine (being offered for an amazing $129.99 through this promotion) is the perfect size for doing those projects. I just completed this double layout of my day with my daughter at Animal Kingdom using the Project Life Midnight Core Kit.
Supplies | Digital Cutting Files: Silhouette (Set 1 3x4 Life Cards by Jamie Cripps, 4 3x4 Life Cards by Lori Whitlock, Explore and Geo Tag 4x6 Journaling Card by Sweet Elsie, Safari by Loni Stevens). Patterned Paper: Crate Paper (Maggie Holmes), BasicGrey (Basics - Lexicon). Cardstock: Bazzill Basics. Washi Tape: Close To My Heart (Slate). Embellishments: Heidi Swapp (Epoxy Word Stickers, Chipboard Hearts). Pen: Sakura (Micron 03). Ink: Close To My Heart (Juniper, Cranberry). Journaling Cards: Becky Higgins Project Life Midnight Edition Core Kit, Becky Higgins Project Life 4x6 Grid Journaling Cards, Technique Tuesday (3x4 Story Cards - Remember by Ali Edwards). Page Protectors: Becky Higgins Project Life (Design A & Design G).
I used the Midnight Core Kit (I also own the Honey core kit) because some of the photos were pretty colorful. The Midnight kit is neutral and let the photos set the color tone for the layout without clashing or competing for attention. I actually only ended up using three elements from the kit. The rest I created from other sources.
Here's a closer look at the pages I assembled:
I try to arrange my photos by topic within a layout like this - this page is largely devoted to my Safari pictures, plus my title. I also included the photo of the thing you see when you first enter the park - the Tree of Life.
The title block is created from a 4x6 journal card from the Project Life Midnight Core Kit, with a digital die cut layered on top if it. It is the Safari by Loni Stevens file, which I flipped horizontally and sized down significantly.
This 3x4 journal card uses one of the features of Silhouette Studio Designer Edition - although it isn't obvious looking at it. Because Designer Edition has rulers and guides available in it, you can place your cuts much more accurately on your paper. I was able to place this cut (and the background on the next page) right where I wanted them on the patterned paper by measuring my placements with rulers.
I backed the journal card with gray cardstock to turn the clouds into rain clouds since we had a rainy, gray day at Animal Kingdom.
The second side of the layout is the rest of the safari and a couple of random photos from the day. Since that spot (and its reverse side) was the only location to work with full size vertical photos, I had to work them in where they were available. The vertical photo of my daughter has a chipboard heart on it to highlight it (as does one on the next page).
This background is the second piece that I used the rulers to cut out with the Silhouette, to make sure that there was plenty of cloud texture behind the words. I chose black for the text to tie in with the Midnight core kit. The cutting file is from a set called Set 1 3x4 Life Cards by Jamie Cripps.
Turning the page, we moved into Camp Minnie Mickey. All these photos were taken there.
I customized my Project Life 4x6 Grid Journaling Cards for this layout with some Close To My Heart washi tape that coordinates beautifully with the Midnight Core Kit to create simple decorative journaling cards. Washi tape is great for creating decorative elements to use with Project Life! It's quick and easy - just like Project Life is supposed to be.
I finished the layout with a die cut journal card from the new Explore and Geo Tag 4x6 Journaling Card by Sweet Elsie cutting file set. I cut it from one of the BasicGrey "Basics" papers, edged it with washi, and backed it with black to coordinate with the Midnight kit. The addition of the Heidi Swapp epoxy stickers gave it a bit more detail and fun.
And now, on to the promotion and giveaway!
When I bought my Silhouette machine, the first thing that I did was also buy the Designer Edition of the software. Why? It does some great things that the standard version can't:
Imports SVG files: With this capability you can import files you've used on another machine or buy files (or get freebies!) almost anywhere: blogs, Etsy, designer stores.
Adds rulers & guides: Precisely size and place your cuts with the use of rulers and guides. If you are used to using these measurements in software such as Photoshop, you'll feel lost without them!
More advanced editing tools: You probably want a Silhouette because of its custom capabilities - the Designer Edition software has more advanced tools for editing such as more precise knife and eraser tools (and more).
Make your own Rhinestone & Sketch patterns - Designer Edition software allows you to convert a shape into a rhinestone or sketch pattern, turning your machine into much more than just a die cut tool!
This month's promotion bundles the Designer Edition software with the machines at great prices, and if you already have a machine, you can get the Designer Edition software for 50% off!
